On Tuesday the 3rd of April, Thulani Chiliza shone with the ball for KZN RPC taking three wickets for twenty runs in ten overs in the team’s victory over Eastern Province. Yesterday, he was yet again instrumental in KZN’s victory over Northerns, this time with the bat – scoring 104* off just 154 balls.
“Thulani played a brillant innings when we found ourselves in trouble early on,” says KZN RPC coach, Darryll Govender. “He showed alot of guts, determination and class to get to his 100 off the last over of the innings.”
“He also bowled exceptionally well claiming 3 for 20 in 10 overs against Eastern Province.”
Chiliza, who is fifteen years old, was introduced to the game as a primary school learner, by the KZNCU, DSR and Sunfoil Township and Rural Development Programme.
“We at the township programme are so proud of Thulani,” says Sanelisiwe Kuzwayo, the manager of the programme. “This young man has faced many challenges. But through it all he has held on to his cricketing aspirations and has been very dedicated and we see that paying off.”
“Special mention must be made of his mother Sindi who has supported him through it all, our township coaches who recognized his talent and honed it and Gela Productions which gave him a bursary, enabling him to study and board at Umlazi Com Tech – this has helped bring stability to his life on and off the cricket field.”
KZNCU Cricket Services Manager, Ritesh Ramjee says that Thulani is a young man with exceptional talents. “He has a bright future ahead – this is outstanding for KZN Cricket and the RPC/Hubs Programme in KZN.” – FATIMA ASMAL
