Makhanya Ton Unable to Prevent Lions Win

A spirited maiden ton for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins by Sibz Makhanya was not enough as the home side went down by nine wickets to the bizhub Highveld Lions in their CSA 4-Day Franchise Series clash that ended at Kingsmead on Monday.

The hosts went into the final day of the contest needing 65 runs to make the Lions bat again to win the match and Makhanya and Cody Chetty continued to bat well despite the Dolphins being on the back foot.

The pair’s partnership was worth 94 before Chetty departed for 53 off 81 deliveries and the Dolphins were 276 for seven.

Makhanya’s second first class hundred, and his first for the Dolphins, came off 160 balls with 14 fours to his name. He continued to battle on and reached 128 before he was caught by Dwayne Pretorius off the bowling of Malusi Siboto.

At that stage the Dolphins were 311 for eight. The final two wickets fell for eight runs with Eathan Bosch being the last man out for 28.

The Lions were set 46 runs to win the match, which they duly completed in the 15th over with Reeza Hendricks finishing 22 not out and Kagiso Rapulana 10 not out.

Sarel Erwee picked up the only wicket of the innings, having Stephen Cook caught and bowled for 15.

The Dolphins will take on the VKB Knights in their next CSA 4-Day Franchise Series clash at the Pietermaritzburg Oval starting on Monday, 14 January.
