Govender takes over as new KZNCU President

Durban – Following the unfortunate and tragic passing of KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union president Ben Dladla in December last year, vice president of the Union Daniel Govender has been elected as the new president until the Annual General Meeting in August.

Govender served under Dladla when he took over the reins at the union from Fa-eez Jaffer at the beginning of the 2018/19 season so has been involved in administration at the union; however sport has played a big role in his life.

“I’ve been involved in sport for all my life,” Govender said. “From athletics, to soccer, to volleyball and cricket, sport is a crucial part of who I am.

“From a cricket administration perspective I took over as the president of the Tongaat Cricket Union in 2010 and served there for nearly ten years as well as sitting on the KZN Council as well as the Management Committee of KZN Cricket.”

Having gained important experience as he worked his way up the ladder of administration, Govender knows that he has an important mandate to continue on the work that Ben Dladla was so heavily passionate about.

“Ben and I were close and I want to try and continue his legacy and follow his example when it comes to governance.

“He set the example for administrators in the province through his good governance, his focus on transformation as well as the way he worked with CEO Mr Heinrich Strydom.

“I will continue to support the CEO who has been doing a good job guiding KZN Cricket into a new era,” Govender added.

CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom is looking forward to working with Govender.

“We struck up a good working relationship during his time as the vice-president and I feel that Mr Govender will add immense value in his new role,” Strydom said.

“The KZN Cricket family continues to grow and push itself to the next level and Mr Govender’s role is going to be important in us continuing to thrive on and off the field.”

Victor Xulu will move into the vacant position of KZNCU Vice-President until the AGM.
