Dolphins fight after poor day one start

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins showed some good fighting spirit following a poor start on day one of their 4-Day Franchise Series clash with the Multiply Titans at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on Monday.

The Dolphins decided that they would bat first on a fairly gloomy day in Durban, and the home side were put under early pressure with the loss of three quick wickets that saw the team three wickets down for nine runs.

SJ Erwee was the first wicket down for one, he was followed by Vaughn van Jaarsveld who was dismissed for six and Cody Chetty followed, caught behind for two.

Captain Khaya Zondo and the experienced Dane Vilas got together and cautiously tried to get the Dolphins back into the game.

The pair put on a stand of 52 runs for the fourth wicket and took the Dolphins to 61 before Vilas was caught behind off a good delivery from Matthew Arnold.

Sibz Makhanya was the next to fall. He was caught in the gully for a duck and then two runs later Zondo was caught at point for 23.

At 63 for six wickets, it didn’t get better for the Dolphins as Grant Roloefsen fell for five, 69 for the loss of seven wickets.

Then the fightback then started with a measured stand between Keshav Maharaj and Eathan Bosch.

The pair looked assured at the wicket and added a crucial 74 runs for the eighth wicket.

Bosch went to his highest score for the Dolphins with 40 before he was out LBW to Shaun von Berg with the total on 143.

Maharaj continued on his way and with the help of debutant Lwandiswa Zuma, the duo added another 40 runs for the ninth wicket before rain brought a premature end to the day’s play.

Maharaj registered his fourth 50 for the Dolphins, finishing the day on 73 not out, his highest score in Dolphins colours, and with the help of the gutsy Zuma, who resumes on Tuesday on four, the pair have taken the Dolphins to 183/8 at the close.
