A promising start with the ball turned south for the Sunfoil Dolphins in their first home game of the Momentum One Day Cup against the bizhub Highveld Lions at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday where the rain proved to be the ultimate winner as the game was washed out with both sides taking away two points from the encounter.
The Dolphins handed two debuts at the start of the game with 2014 South Africa Under-19 captain and all-rounder Sibonelo Makhanya together with fast bowler Rabian Engelbrecht winning their first caps for the franchise.
The Lions were put into bat by skipper Morné van Wyk and it was a brilliant start for the home side as Craig Alexander had returning Protea Alviro Petersen caught behind for a duck in the first over of the game.
It was a measured regroup from the Lions batsmen as the Dolphins strung a number of tight overs together and it was other opener and Lions captain Stephen Cook (9) who was the next man to head back to the hut when he was caught at first slip by Vaughn van Jaarsveld off then bowling of Robbie Frylinck.
The diminutive Themba Bevuma was the third man down when he was trapped in front by the debutant Makhanya for 17 which brought Jean Symes to the crease and he began to patiently build an innings with the veteran Neil McKenzie with the Highveld side in a spot of bother at 45-3.
It was the pair from Johannesburg that started slowly in their quest to build a competitive total in their rain reduced 45 overs. The two cobbled together a patient stand as they constructed a platform towards the end of the innings before taking the Lions deep into the heart of the 45 overs.
McKenzie brought up his 11 List-A century and Symes ended unbeaten on 97 as the partnership ballooned to an undefeated stand of 188 as the visitors set the hosts a tricky 233 off 45 overs to win their second game in a row.
The Dolphins attack was spearheaded by the returning Prenelan Subrayan who recorded figures of 0/35 in nine overs. The off-spinner was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket but he was the one bowler who managed to keep the two in-batsmen under wraps.
The Dolphins’ innings was only one over old when the rain returned to play havoc again as the teams went off and returned twice before the elements took control and the game was called off with both sides taking two points from the clash.
Summary of result:
bizhub Highveld Lions 233/3
Sunfoil Dolphins 1/1
