Having bowled out the bizhub Highveld Lions for 421 in their first innings in reply to their 302, the Sunfoil Dolphins capitulated in front of a brilliant spell of fast bowling from the young Kagiso Rabada who returned figures of 9/33 during the Dolphins’ second innings which meant the hosts chased down a meagre 16 to set up a convincing 10 wicket win.
With very few players putting up their hand during the four days of cricket, Cody Chetty’s first innings ton was one of the few highlights for the visitors.
The only partnership to speak of was the stand between Chetty and Daryn Smit, who notched up another first-class half century but it was cut short when he retired hurt on 60 after being hit in the neck by Lions’ seamer Chris Morris.
42 from skipper Morné van Wyk was the final significant contribution for the Dolphins as the side from the East Coast were bowled out for a shade over 300.
In reply, Lions’ opener Stephen Cook (122) continued his rich vein of form as he broke the 100 run barrier once again. Chip-in’s throughout saw the hosts erase the deficit and set the Dolphins what nearly proved to be an impenetrable 119 to bat again.
Rabada then stole the show and, following his confidence boosting 1st inning 5-for, ripped through the heart of the Dolphins’ batting line-up in the second inning. Opener Divan van Wyk showed some resistance on his way to 56 but not even he could escape the red-hot Rabada who knocked him over and so the procession started.
The Dolphins lost six wickets for 58 runs as Rabada finished with figures of 9/33 and a haul of fourteen in the match.
The Lions knocked off the 16 runs required and firmly reasserted themselves at the top of the Sunfoil Series log whilst the Dolphins remain in third place with the Chevrolet Knights visiting Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban this week from 26 February to 1 March.
