The KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union congratulates Hashim Amla on his brilliant performances in India.

“It’s an absolutely outstanding performance by Hashim. He’s had a great year in all formats of the game and his display in India is the cherry on the cake. He is getting better and better and now stands out as one of the greats in Natal and South African cricket,” said Jesse Chellan, CEO at the KZNCU.

Amla was named man of the match in a losing cause in Kolkata with scores of 114 and 123 not out. He was only dismissed once in amassing 490 runs in four innings including three centuries (253 not out, 114 and 123 not out) which made him an easy choice for man of the series as well.

His 490 runs in a two test series is a new South African record, beating Jacques Kallis’ 421 runs against Pakistan in 2007. He also became the fourth batsman to score consecutive hundreds at Eden Gardens.

Amla also set a few other notable records in India. His 253 not out in the first test   was South Africa’s highest on the sub-continent as well as the highest against India. It was also the highest by a South African No. 3 batsman on the sub-continent, beating Jacques Rudolph’s 222 not out against Bangladesh.

“I am very grateful for reaching these important milestones. Having said that, it is disappointing to lose this game after the excellent work done by Parnell and Morkel,” said the ever humble Amla.

Amla will not be returning home after his heroics, but will remain with the team as a replacement for Graeme Smith for the One day series after controversially being dropped from the one day squad.
