QUINTON FRIEND bounced back after being left out of his franchise’s opening match to seize the initiative for the Nashua Dolphins on the opening day of their SuperSport Series match against the Chevrolet Warriors at Axxess Park St. George’s on Thursday. Friend forced the Warriors back on their heels after the home side had won the toss, taking 5/28 in 15.3 overs to dismiss the home side for only 174. In the process he recorded his 150th first-class wicket in his 50th first-class match. By the close the Dolphins had been restricted to 40/2 in their first innings and the Warriors’ total could still prove to be competitive. Friend captured the key wicket of Ashwell Prince up front and made further inroads including the later wickets of Wayne Parnell and Justin Kreusch who had threatened to get the Warriors out of the hole. Kreusch and Parnell came together at 99/6 and steadied matters with a partnership of 72 for the seventh wicket before Friend dismissed Parnell for an invaluable 40 (93 balls, 7 fours) with the aid of Hashim Amla’s third catch of the innings. Once Parnell was dismissed the remaining three wickets fell for only three runs with Kreusch last man out for 38 (141 balls, 7 fours). Top score of 42 (81 balls, 6 fours) went to Davy Jacobs who shared the only other partnership of any substance of 46 for the fifth wicket with Kreusch. The Dolphins lost the key wicket of Hashim Amla in what turned out to be the last over of the day and the Dolphins may end up depending as much on their all-rounders as has already been the case for the Warriors with vital middle-order runs. |
