The country’s most promising players on Friday departed for the 2009 Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, for two weeks of tightly contested cricket against squads from New Zealand India and Australia. The Emerging Players squad will play in eight 50-over matches and two 20-over games with the final taking place on 1 August.

“This tour is part of the National High Performance strategy to expose more players to international competition. More opportunities of this nature should be encouraged so that the gap between Franchise players and the Proteas is narrowed,” remarked Coach, Corrie van Zyl.

CSA CEO, Gerald Majola, wished the squad well: "The players we have sent to this tournament before have gone on to become international stars.  This squad is an important part of our policy to pursue excellence and we are confident that the players will compete to their full potential. They are our investment for the future."

The squad had a disappointing tournament last year, finishing fourth, and winning only one of their six 50-over matches, but assistant coach Shafiek Abrahams admits that the focus for the players is to return as more experienced and rounded cricketers.

“The aim of this tournament is not about winning but to grow mature and grounded cricketers. India and New Zealand have picked top-class players and our members will get an opportunity to play against some of the world’s best. We have an exciting set of players, a lot of them performed well in the domestic season and have been rewarded with a wonderful opportunity. The squad is well balanced and the younger players can feed off the older guys as well as off the experience of some of the Proteas players, ” said Abrahams.

Their first match is a T20 against New Zealand on Monday 20 July.
