Second innings half-centuries from Khaya Zondo and Daryn Smit ensured the Sunfoil Series clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and BuildNat Cape Cobras ended without much drama after the final day at Boland Park in Paarl on Sunday.
The match ended in a draw with the visitors reaching 207/4 before the two captain’s shook hands just before tea.
Right-hander Zondo, who hit a career-best 157 in the first innings, hit an unbeaten 57 (110 balls, 6 fours) second time around, while in-form Smit top-scored with 82 (113 balls, 14 fours).
Only three wickets fell in the 53 overs sent down on day four – Imraan Khan (7), Vaughn Jaarsveld (30) and Smit. The three bowlers to striker were Dane Piedt (1/84), Dane Paterson (1/22) and Stiaan van Zyl (1/18).
The result brought some respite for the Cobras after three losses from their previous four games, although they remain bottom of the table as the only winless team at the halfway stage of the competition.
They walked away with 6.52 points from the match, while the Dolphins took 7.02 points, which left them fourth at the completion of the first half of the of the four-day competition, just 5.16 points behind log leaders, Multiply Titans.
The South African domestic cricket focus now shifts to white ball cricket for the festive season as the 2016/17 CSA T20 Challenge gets gets underway this weekend.
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ opening clash of the action-packed campaign sees them host the Warriors at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Sunday, 13 November with play getting underway at 14h30.
